Mom who was asked to stop breastfeeding in public shares empowering message - Emily Locke turned an aggressive shaming incident at the Western Reserve Historical Society in Cleveland, Ohio, into a positive. The Head Nutritionist, Federal Ministry of Health, Dr. Chris Osa Isokpunwu, said; “Even the rich are affected because they do not know the right food to give their children. Many do not know that exclusive breastfeeding in the first six months will prevent illnesses”.

POSITIVE BREASTFEEDING INITIATIVES IN THE NEWS

Breastfeeding Grant To Focus On African American Populations - The Savannah, Georgia Coastal Health District’s Breastfeeding Program has received a grant from the National Association of County and City Health Officials (NACCHO) to initiate programs aimed at reducing disparities in breastfeeding in African Americans and under-served communities in Chatham County. The programs will focus on peer and professional lactation support and will last through June 2016.

Lynchburg organization expands breastfeeding awareness program - An effort to encourage breastfeeding is growing in Lynchburg, Virginia. Live Healthy Lynchburg recently received a $50,000 grant from The Centra Foundation. $8,000 of the grant will be used to expand a campaign called "Breastfeeding Welcome" by creating a breastfeeding support guide for men.

Brookings Heading New Breastfeeding Initiative - Brookings, South Dakota, is heading a new initiative to make more businesses breastfeeding friendly to nursing mothers.

WORLD BREASTFEEDING LAW SPOTLIGHT

According to Section 7(c)(3) of Israel's Employment of Women Law, employees are entitled to be absent from work for one hour per day for the first 4 months following maternity leave without it impacting their salary as long as they are employed full-time.

Jamie Grumet of Nurture Tomorrow reflects this week on the only other mother to have been featured breastfeeding on the cover of TIME Magazine. Jamie notes, "[H]ere we are in 2016 with yet another refugee crisis and so many mothers who are in need of support to safely feed their babies." She concludes her message with a call to visit nurturetomorrow.org and "learn how you can help mothers who are doing another warrior trek on this earth to save their children."
