This Week's Quote

A newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three.

FEATURED ADVOCATE OF THE WEEK

Jackie Mills is the #PositiveBreastfeeding Advocate of the Week. Jackie describes some positive moments from the past year:

"My name is Jackie and I am a proud Mommy to my one year old son, Carter. Carter and I have had a very successful year of nursing and we are still going strong! Carter is a very busy little boy so I cherish our quiet nursing snuggles! I love feeling his body melt into mine, hearing his sleepy sighs and watching him drift off to sleep when he nurses. Motherhood and nursing have been the most special and rewarding experiences for me. I look forward to many, many more nursing snuggles with my precious baby! ♡♡♡"

Thank you, Jackie, for keeping it positive!

MEDIA BLITZ ACTION OF THE WEEK

Get ready for World Breastfeeding Week! Each week from now through the beginning of August, we will provide action steps to achieve a well-attended, well publicized breastfeeding awareness event with a strong media presence.

Getting media coverage is empowering! You don't have to be nervous, because you are completely capable of delivering the ‪ #‎positivebreastfeeding‎ ‪ information at your fingertips.

What will you say when you are interviewed while on camera or being otherwise recorded?

  • Share your PURPOSE for holding the event.

  • Share some FACTS about:

  • The law

  • Breastfeeding research

  • Long/short term benefits of breastfeeding (or risks of not breastfeeding)

  • Recommendations from health organizations

It helps to have your elevator speech, or a couple key facts, memorized for quick reference.

Michelle Hickman of Best for Babes has published an excellent reference guide for creating talking points. Visit it here.

What will you AVOID saying?

  • Are there questions you anticipate being asked, but do not wish to answer for fear of negative press?

  • Think of some questions you want to tactfully dodge and how you might answer them.

  • A common question asked in media interviews about breastfeeding is about COVERING. Our gut reaction might be to share what we do or don't do in our nursing relationships. However, this is not what we want the media to air. We want to keep the press positive.

  • A planned answer that many have used before that avoids directly answering the question is "It is up to the mother" or "I support all moms". This makes the question a non-issue. Next question!

Make sure that all event organizers have a copy of the talking points and are on board with the message to be conveyed to the media.
