This Week's Quote

A newborn baby has only three demands. They are warmth in the arms of its mother, food from her breasts, and security in the knowledge of her presence. Breastfeeding satisfies all three.

ADVOCATE OF THE DAY

Judy McClennen Schneider is the #WBW2016 Day 5 Advocate of the Day. Her nomination was submitted by her daughter, Martha Moore:

"Since it's World Breastfeeding Week, I have to take a minute to honor my mom, the baby whisperer, who has not only supported my sisters and I, but also many, many other women, including most of my friends even though she's now retired (thanks, mom!). I feel incredibly blessed to have an IBCLC as a mother who taught us that breastfeeding is normal and natural, even though it can be tough at times. Thanks, mom! I appreciate you!"

DAILY ACTIONS

The ‎Daily Action‬ for 5 August is to share the Physician's Pledge to Promote, Protect, and Support Breastfeeding.

The World Alliance for Breastfeeding Action - WABA, the organizer of ‪#‎WBW2016‬, works year-round to protect, promote, and support breastfeeding worldwide. A major step we can take to achieve our joint goal is to ensure our physicians abide by this pledge.

Please commit to do the following: 1. Ask your physicians if they have signed the pledge. Consider approaching physicians who work with pregnant and postpartum women, as well as newborns and young children. 2. If they HAVE or if they SIGN after being asked, give them positive recommendations based on this pledge. 2. If they will NOT sign, ask why. Ask which specific section(s) is/are of concern.

The ‎Bonus Action‬ for 5 August is to contact a local physician and ask about the Physician's Pledge and WHO Code compliance.

Both documents can be found here:

Here is a step-by-step guide to ask about WHO Code compliance and the Physician's Pledge.

1. Call your physician's office and ask to speak with the office manager.

2. Wish him/her a happy World Breastfeeding Week.

4. Ask about office policy for recommending infant feeding products (formulas, bottles, etc.) and displaying literature provided by representatives from these companies.

5. Ask about office policy for supporting breastfeeding and displaying positive breastfeeding imagery in the office.

6. Ask if the office has signed the Physician's Pledge; if not, ask if you may come in with a copy to be signed.
